Hunter was snuggled behind me when I woke the next morning. The lightness of his breathing told me he was awake.

“You’re not angry?” I felt the need to ask the question.

He chuckled. “I’m not, but I’m still ... uneasy.”

“I won’t break into Phoebe’s house again. You have my word.”

“What about other people’s houses?”

“Only if I have a really good reason.”

“Or how about you don’t for any reason.”

“See, I can’t promise that and mean it.” I rolled to face him. “I mean, what happens if some evil warlock takes you prisoner? I might know who has you, but if I promise not to break into houses then I won’t be able to save you because my word is my bond.”

His eyes were still heavy-lidded from sleep, his jaw stubbled, but he managed to look stern. “And why would a warlock want to take me prisoner?”

“Because you’re my boyfriend — you called me your girlfriend first, so it’s okay if I say it — and someone might want to use you as a weapon against me.”

He stared into my eyes. “Do you plan to have a lot of wars with evil warlocks?”

“I’m pretty sure nobody plans for that. It just happens.”

“Well, in that case, you won’t have to keep your word.”

“You say that now, but what if the warlock is one of your basketball buddies? Will you still think it’s okay for me to break my promise then? And who gets to decide when it’s okay to break my promise? I would rather take it on a case-by-case basis.”

“This is just you creating wiggle room for yourself. I recognize the maneuver from when we were teenagers.”

“I was an absolute angel when we were teenagers.”

He smirked. “You were ... something.” He pressed a kiss to my mouth and sighed. “I don’t want to argue.”

“Me either. It’s a total bummer.”

“I just want to remind you that you made a promise last night. You’re going to be more careful.”

“Yes.”

“You’re going to ask yourself, ‘What would Hunter do?’ before doing something.”

“I might ask that. I can’t always guarantee I’ll do what you would want me to do.”

“How about you call me and ask my opinion before you do anything questionable?”

“Um ... no. That’s not going to happen. I’ll tell you why.” I tapped my finger against his chin. “You’re not the boss of me.”

“You’re my girlfriend, something I plan to spread far and wide so everybody knows. I don’t consider myself the boss of you, but we are a team. We need to run certain things by one another.”

He was being sneaky and thought I didn’t realize it. “Are you going to run your investigative techniques by me? I mean ... do I have a say in whether you take on an armed assailant and put yourself in danger?”

“No, because that’s part of my job. You knew that when we started dating.”

“And I’m perfectly fine with it.” I meant it, except for the niggling wisp of fear that occasionally popped when I thought too hard about what Hunter did for a living.
